Netflix Autoplay Made You Miss a Cyberpunk: The Edgerunners Secret
If you watched Netflix new anime, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners, chances are you’re still dealing with its emotionally devastating end and you’ve talked to your therapist about it unprompted several times. But the pain doesn’t end there, my friends. There’s a high chance that Netflix’s aggressive autoplay feature, which will queue up something new to watch while your blurry vision focuses on all the crying, could have caused you to miss a really cool reference. hidden in the anime’s closing credits.
If you’ve been living under a rock without a Wi-Fi connection, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is game developer CD Projekt Red and animation studio’s 10-episode show Trigger, which premiered on the streamer on September 13. It follows a street kid named David Martinez who, after the untimely death of her mother, dives headfirst into the criminal underworld of Night City with the help of her team of edgerunners and highly volatile military technology.
Yesterday, Rafal Jaki, the executive producer and showrunner of Cyberpunk: Edge Runners posted a tweet congratulating a Redditor from the r/Edgerunner subreddit for finding an easter egg related to the mysterious cybergirl Lucy and his fascination with the moon. While Trigger and “go to space” are no strangers to each other, this time around his affinity for the cosmos goes deeper than just aesthetics.
According to the Reddit user YorBoyChristhe brief snippets of Lucy juxtaposed with shots of the moon during the anime’s closing theme song, let you downis a reference to The Moon Tarot Card. For those unfamiliar with the meaning of this tarot card, it basically boils down to things not always being what they seem and letting your intuition guide you through this mess of a world. A message that is the whole thesis of the character of Lucy inside cyberpunk‘s mythos, given her desire to escape Night City, a city she considers a “cage of light”. Also, as a side note, if you draw the Moon tarot face up it symbolizes “the release from fear, pent up emotion and inner confusion, when drawn vertically it symbolizes “illusion, fear and anxiety”, according to Biddy Tarot. I don’t know about you, but this adds a whole new layer to the understatement”the moon is beautiful tonight.”

The Moon wasn’t the only Tarot reference the Redditor spotted in the anime. During the climax of the anime’s 10th episode (“My Moon My Man”), YurBoyChris postulated that David’s smile was not circumstantial, but served as a reference for the show The sun tarot, which symbolizes the realization of his dream. Although Jaki didn’t approve of this theory, it seems to carry some weight as far as I’m concerned.

Regarding the moon tarot, Jaki said Kotaku by e-mail that Trigger was responsible for this reference. Kotaku has reached out to CD Projekt Red Community Manager Satoru Homma for comment. When asked if viewers should expect to find more hidden Easter eggs in the anime, Jaki replied. Kotaku that the series is still packed with a ton of references, but it’s not going to spill cyber beans anytime soon.
“I would like to keep this to myself as I feel immense joy once someone connects this dot,” Jaki said, ending the email with a smiley face.
Jaki left a bread crumb in the form of the question: “Where do the police come from?” so you internet sleuths can get to that one. Good speed.
edge runnerOther than Jaki’s clever tarot reference, whenever Jaki doesn’t share dope fan art of the series on Twitter, he drops more hints about some of the anime’s behind-the-scenes details. The most notable details were the origin of Lucy’s namefun interaction with Trigger during the show almost excluding best girl Rebeccaand if David is Sandevistan can be used during sexy times. True believers know that the answer to this question is a resounding yes.
